How 3 Laid Off Employees Started A High-Tech Company

History of a Successful Startup

Fire In The Belly: Building A World-leading
High-tech Company From Scratch
In Tumultuous Times

Co-authors, Jerry D. Neal & Jerry Bledsoe, appeared recently
on a 17-minute c-span segment. They gave an insightful and amusing account
of the high tech company’s start-up challenges with product development
and the loss of a major client early on.
http://tinyurl.com/o6zrlz4

Fire in the Belly:…worth reading for those
with an interest in high-tech and entrepreneurship.
And note the irony of the subtitle:
it was written in 2005, more than three years before the global
economic collapse in 2008.

Takeaways Include:
Employees can be laid off or fired…but when you are the boss…
it’s the clients who might do the firing…

The founders used the work is play concept…and they also
understood the importance from the beginning that they had to
match proper skill set and knowledge to grow their business.

Making A Living in the Internet Age

 Cory Doctorow’s Laws

photo-1416339134316-0e91dc9ded92_500

How small artists can make a living in the digital age despite
legal and business conflicts with the corporate world is the
primary theme of Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free:
Laws for the Internet Age,
by guru, activist
and author Cory Doctorow.

During a recent author discussion, topics, such as copyright,
DRM, and contract issues in the music and publishing industries
were some of the topics included.

For example, once upon a time, many years ago,
new recording artists signed to a record company
had to agree in their contacts to pay the record company
a specified fee out of future royalties for Breakage.

You see, old fashioned records would sometimes break during shipping.
Broken records meant loss of revenue and someone had to reimburse
the company for that loss.
Fortunately, with the invention of the Mp3 the Breakage clause is no longer
required in the industry in the 21st century.…

You’d think so wouldn’t you…?
According to Doctorow, you’d be wrong.…

Aptitudes In Action

 Cool Examples of Finger Dexterity

In the 1920’s, Johnson O’Connor,
a General Electric engineer,
wanted a new way to evaluate
which jobs workers were best suited for.

Mr. O’Connor, a former John Dewey student,
developed a Finger Dexterity test,
which focused on workers needs rather than management.

Several people who illustrate
high-level Finger Dexterity are noted in this post.
If each person is ranked as 10 on a scale of 1-10,
where might you be on the scale?

Classic episode from the second season of the 1950’s sitcom
in which Lucy and Ethel get jobs in a candy factory.

Notice the silent efficient candy maker on the assembly line…
Note: Some people may be forced to admit that their
Finger Dexterity aptitudes
match Lucy Ricardo’s.

The School Started by Civil War Veterans

The School Started by Civil War Vets

When the War Between the States ended, soldiers
from two regiments of colored infantries pooled their funds
to start a school in 1886.

At first, they named it Lincoln Institute.
It was founded as a school of higher learning for
freed African Americans in Missouri.

Today, the diverse student body at Lincoln University (LU)
is the only institution of higher learning founded by African American
Civil War Veterans. It’s also the only university established by veterans
of any color from any military branch.

Continuing a pattern of innovation in education, in 1940,
LU became the first Historically Black College (HBC) to offer
a journalism degree. And the only HBC to offer one for the next 25 years!
