Avril Lavigne: illness Disrupted Ability to Work

Avril Lavigne, bedridden because of a mystery illness, told by top doctors it was all in her head.

Her experience is all too common.

Women are far more likely than male patients to have their unexplained maladies dismissed as emotional.

Unfortunately, fame and fortune can override a historical issue that many women confront when they have an unidentified sickness.

Lavigne’s illness was later discovered to be Lyme disease. One can’t help but feel that her emotional account is partly because of the attitude of medical professionals who prolonged the ordeal.

Be aware that bias or a poor medical skill set may not always be apparent to the patient. And while other professional opinions are a must, learning self-patient advocacy is vital.

Learning how to research health issues. How to size up medical personnel, choose the right specialist, and communicate is a must.
And doing so as enrichment and educational activity while healthy is an ideal stress-free way to learn.

Aptitudes and Skills in Popular Movies

Taken & The Shawshank Redemption

cinema-strip-64074_640

So I have already noted previously that the most
chilling self-evaluation of one’s skill set is probably uttered
by Liam Neeson’s character
during a phone call in the film Taken…

“What I do have are a particular set of skills…”

You see, Neeson’s character is a CIA operative
and the phone conversation is part of
his introduction to his daughter’s abductor.

The voice on the phone sneers a two-word reply.
Relying in part on his auditory aptitude,
the CIA operative and dad begins the hunt for the mystery caller
with a distinctive speech pattern.

His skill set summary, a grimly amusing
masterpiece
of understatement…

But the Oscar for most innovative transfer and use of aptitudes,
skills, and interests goes to Tim Robbins’ character, prisoner Andy Dufresne,
in The Shawshank Redemption…a film about miscarriage of justice.

Dufresne, a good guy thrust into horrible circumstances, learns how to adapt in an unfamiliar environment. And never has dexterity, a passion for music, and numerical aptitudes been used more deviously.
Note:  Comparing this film with the recent New York prison break
is incorrect.

Why Small Town Newspapers Are Thriving Despite the Web

Entrepreneurship and Journalism

Journalism professor, Judy Muller,Colorful arangement of the word new, two letters and two letters below acrosss
appeared on C-Span to talk about her book,
Emus Loose in Egnar: Big Stories from Small Towns.
And how and why contrary to popular belief,
many small newspapers continue to thrive
despite technology upheaval.

For journalism majors with entrepreneurial aspirations,

mentioned in the C-Span interview.

A colorful, fascinating and insightful real-world glimpse
into  the day-to-day challenge
of operating a small-town weekly newspaper.

Personality Traits of Mini Aretha Franklin

Johanna Colon
UPDATE:
Youtube has removed the official video since it went viral…
But it can be seen on ABC News. The link has been added to this list.

ballet-542170_640

Granted this video is off the charts in the adorable factor…
6-year old Johanna Colon is a delightful diva talent…
but watch her performance closely and you see something
more in her body language…a leader and one who repeatedly
displayed care and concern for her…umm… entourage.

Wanting to know more about the little dancer
I went in search of an article and confirmed my impressions,
but I also learned that
Johanna has the ability to
read people well.

So I wonder if studying the videos of other children at recitals
might reveal clues about personality traits and aptitudes?

How A Food Blog Landed A Movie Deal

Lessons And Inspiration for Aspiring Writers

pot-544071_640

Back in 2002, Julie Powell, an aspiring writer with a day job
she disliked, decided to start a blog in her spare time.
The posts would chronicle for a year her daily attempt
to prepare a recipe from Julie Child’s iconic
cookbook on the art of French cuisine.

Powell’s project reportedly  irritated French chef Child but landed
the aspiring writer a book and movie deal. And her blog is regarded
as the first blog to inspire a Hollywood movie…Julie/Julia

Today Pinterest and Instagram would likely be the platforms used.
Following in Powell’s footsteps, what book would you choose?

What activity or task would you want to learn about and document/
Would you post on Pinterest, Instagram, blog posts,
private journal for a year?

Fired Colorado School Lunch Worker Becomes Own Boss

When Personal Values Clash With Work Policy

paper-bag-297223_640
Amazing story that highlights absurd aspect s of
bureaucratic policy and why some seek alternatives…

Several thoughts yesterday as I watched Della Curry’s
interview on CNN:

From the district’s point of view, the cafeteria manager violated
policy by repeatedly feeding children who could not afford
to pay for their meals.
Meals that policy dictates must be thrown away.

Really?

An argument could be made that giving students a cold sandwich
and milk instead of a hot meal borders on shaming and punishment.
One wonders why Curry’s actions would be considered anything other
than compassionate and common sense rather than …theft.

Really?

After watching Curry’s interview, one could not help but get an
impression that she had strong communication and interpersonal skills,
highly personable manner.

And I wondered if Curry had considered using her experience
to start a nonprofit or social enterprise that focuses on an issue that clearly
is not being fully addressed. Because if she landed another
job in the same field and if confronted by more hungry children…
what would she do?

Today’s Good Morning America interview
provided more details.

It turns out Curry has a business background.
Her plan is to lobby elected officials for a policy change
And she is now is planning to resume an entrepreneurial path.

Cheers!

Food Network Searches For the Next Star

Season 11

bell-pepper-569070_640

Season 11 of The Next Food Network Star starts this weekend.
And the ever present ad offers a few glimpses of contestants:
one proclaims destiny and Hollywood while another
mentions a specific target group for her culinary skills…children.

If the latter contestant has creative cooking talent,
communication chops and personality for video,
and there are enough numbers in the target viewing
audience, the contestant is in the running.
The network has no regular feature in the genre.
Although kid-friendly themed programming aired last year…

As for the other contestant…destiny and Hollywood are not niches…

The TV industry is a vast array of niches…
evident when you glance through Roku’s list of free
and fee-based channels.

It will be interesting to see what the other
contestants will offer. Some bios point to specific
kinds of specialties. Karam and Decote might be possibilities….

Note TV.com’s description of prerequisite skills
needed by contestants is misleading because even
if one nails all the points described, if the point of view
presented is already part of the Food Network’s regular programming…next.
