When the War Between the States ended, soldiers
from two regiments of colored infantries pooled their funds
to start a school in 1886.
At first, they named it Lincoln Institute.
It was founded as a school of higher learning for
freed African Americans in Missouri.
Today, the diverse student body at Lincoln University (LU)
is the only institution of higher learning founded by African American
Civil War Veterans. It’s also the only university established by veterans
of any color from any military branch.
Continuing a pattern of innovation in education, in 1940,
LU became the first Historically Black College (HBC) to offer
a journalism degree. And the only HBC to offer one for the next 25 years!
